Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki and where did it originate?

In 1922, Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar and monk, experienced a profound revelation atop Mount Kurama after 21 days of meditation, where he experienced a profound spiritual awakening that led to the development of the Reiki system of healing. This event marked his enlightenment and deep understanding of life's essence.

The term "Reiki," pronounced Ray-Key, originates from Japanese:

  • "Rei" means "Universal Life," representing omnipresent spiritual awareness or wisdom from the higher self.

  • "Ki" translates to "Energy," the vital force that animates all living things.

When the flow of Ki is balanced, individuals may experience greater vitality and ease, while imbalance may be associated with stress or discomfort. Reiki functions as a holistic system, harmonizing physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of the individual, promoting natural healing abilities and personal and spiritual growth.

It is spiritually guided and not tied to any specific faith or religious practice, offering a safe, gentle, and non-invasive method of energy healing.

What are Chakras?

Chakras are energy centers in the body (the Sanskrit word means “wheels”) that connect the physical and energetic systems. There are seven main chakras aligned from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each chakra is associated with specific organs, emotions, and aspects of personal and spiritual well-being, helping to distribute life force energy (often called Qi or Prana) throughout the body.

The lower chakras relate more to physical needs, safety, and personal identity, the heart chakra bridges the physical and spiritual, and the upper chakras are connected to communication, intuition, and higher awareness. When energy flows smoothly through the chakras, we tend to feel more balanced physically, emotionally, and energetically.

How may Reiki benefit us?

Reiki is known for supporting deep relaxation and overall well-being. Many individuals report feeling calmer, more centered, and emotionally balanced after a session. By encouraging the body’s natural relaxation response, Reiki may help ease stress and support the body’s ability to restore balance.

Some people notice improvements in sleep quality, mood, mental clarity, or their general sense of groundedness. Because each person’s experience is unique, results can vary from session to session.

Reiki is intended to complement, not replace, appropriate medical or mental health care. It does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions, but rather supports the body’s natural processes by creating space for rest, awareness, and energetic alignment.

Why do your distant Reiki sessions last 30–60 minutes?

Although Reiki is not limited by physical distance, I intentionally dedicate 30–60 minutes to each session to create a calm, focused space for your healing. This time allows for a thorough energetic scan, chakra balancing, intuitive insight, and gentle integration.

Rather than rushing the process, the session is structured to give your nervous system space to settle and your energy the opportunity to receive and rebalance at its own pace.

How is Distant Reiki performed?

Distant Reiki is based on the understanding that energy is not limited by physical space or time. Through focused intention, the practitioner connects with your energy field and channels Reiki to you wherever you are.

During a session, the practitioner creates a grounded, intentional space and may visualize your energy or use a surrogate (such as a photo or object) to support the connection. They serve as a conduit for universal life force energy, allowing your system to receive what it needs.

Many clients report experiences similar to in-person sessions, as Reiki works with the energetic connection rather than physical proximity.

What does Reiki feel like?

During a session, the majority of people report tingling sensations, twitching, stomach rumbling, changes in body temperature, feelings of relaxation, and sleepiness. Some claim to see colors, feel as though they are floating, and feel either light or heavy within their bodies.

After a session, you may feel calm and peaceful, or happier, lighter, and invigorated. It is also completely normal not to feel anything at all. It may just take a while longer for your body to process the session.

Each person’s experience is unique and may unfold over time. Shifts can occur solely on an energetic level at first, but over time can have physical results as well.

How often should I receive Reiki treatment?

The duration of Reiki benefits depends on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people notice shifts after a single session, while others prefer ongoing support. It depends on your unique circumstances and your healing goals.

At first, more frequent sessions are recommended, with the frequency gradually decreasing as improvements are noticed. Once you start feeling better, the effects of a session can last from several days to a few weeks. It's important to remember that Reiki is cumulative, so consistent sessions over time can lead to longer-lasting benefits.

Working closely with a Reiki practitioner to develop a personalized treatment plan and maintaining consistency are key for achieving the best results. Regular distant Reiki sessions (once or twice a month) are beneficial in terms of preventing or managing existing difficulties.

You do not need to be suffering from any ailment to benefit from Reiki. Sessions can assist in keeping the energy pathways open, reducing the chance of illness caused by blocked chakras.
